Why President Shane Reese Almost Unenrolled from BYU as a Student
When President Shane Reese was enrolled as a young freshman at BYU, he really struggled to feel like he belonged there. Through a mutual connection, he found himself in a meeting with a young law professor by the name of Kevin Worthen.

In the full conversation, we had a lot of questions for BYU's new president.
Is there anything he’d do differently? What is BYU's "divinely established" mission? What's at stake if BYU doesn't fulfill its mission? What is the current student experience, and how can we improve it?
We discuss President Reese’s hard time acclimating as a new student at BYU, what it’s like to report to General Authorities, and his hopes for the future of BYU.

Wonderful! I love hearing people's testimonies and their interchanges with our Heavenly FAther. Thank you so so much for following the spirit and not being scared off by anything. I can't wait to see the monument! I live in Pennsylvania and am 83 and don't leave my home very often, so haven't seen the monument yet. Hopefully there will be photos in the Liahona so I can see it. Keep doing what you are doing with Father. He must be proud of you and your courage to follow His lead.

He was sealed with many women, but he did not have intimate sexual relations with them, and that is why there is no son or daughter of him, except only with his wife, because he was not sealed with women to have intimate relations, but that so that they would have sealings in the temple

This is one of the most PROFOUND podcasts I have ever listened to. On so many levels. I feel like my brain is connecting on so many levels. JUST WOW.. It is everything I believe and so much of what I have noticed or pondered.. especially at the end as you spoke of using the holy name of Jesus Christ more often and in holy ways. I work in the Manti temple. As I speak the ordinances, I have many times pondered the holy words of these ordinances. It has been impressed upon my name how very HOLY the names of God and Jesus Christ are as I repeat these ordinances. As I speak them, I say them with deep reverence. We are so blessed to be able to call upon our Father in the holy name of Jesus Christ. Thank you so much for all you have shared. I will be looking for your book. thank you so very much.

There is one reason, and one reason alone for the prohibition of beards and long-hair at BYU: they were strongly identified with the counter-culture in America during the 1960's. That's it: this is not doctrinal. It's a leftover from the 1960's. I think this illustrates perfectly how excruciating change can be in the LDS church. Obviously, this identification is still strongly held in the minds of leaders that were in their prime in the 1960's. The ironic thing is I suppose is it has been 40 years or more since anyone thought seriously that long hair and facial hair have any association with "unrighteousness". And yes, as many comments have pointed out, you can line up the many LDS prophets who would not be welcome at BYU (everyone prior to David O McKay who was probably the first cleanshaven apostle in this dispensation). BYU wants to be taken seriously in academia yet it is still hobbled by such pettiness, and it is not well-respected by the great majority of higher education. Not one single temple recommend question explores an individuals actual relationship with Christ, or how they serve their fellowman. It took 40 years for the Church to issue a clarifying statement so members no longer had to feeling guilty about drinking a caffeinated beverage (and Bishops didn't feel obligated to deny a temple recommend to those who did imbibe--and yes there were some Bishops who did that). The LDS Church is obsessed with all the external stuff that gives people the appearance of righteousness. Jesus condemned this constantly when he said they tithe mint and rue, yet omit the weightier matters of the law (the principles of Justice & Mercy for example). Also, describing the Pharisees: they made the outward platter clean, yet inwardly they are full of dead men's bones. I had a nephew who became inactive (in part) because the other priests in the ward would be out Saturday night with the girls in the ward, and would show up neatly dressed and groomed the next morning to bless the sacrament. There's nothing wrong with being neat and clean in personal appearance. But, when appearance alone substitutes for actual righteousness, that strikes me as a problem.

I don't think that we have the right framework to deal with the core issues around self worth problems that we percieve are within us. Identify and then Eradicate these false opinions or stories we have within us, and connecting with ourself, Christ and others is way easier. One must learn to love thenself first, before we can love another. Experts such as Dr Gabor Maté, Tony Robbins, or Marissa Peers are some excellent sources of expertise on this topic.

Thanks again Bishop Steve. Loved the interview. This is just crazy to hear the ratio of the Endowment to Saints. Saddens me to hear that meager number per Saint. Reflects the lack of Faith of the Saints to trust in God and pay Tithing. Just imagine if even 50% of Covenant Israel began paying Tithing. Imagine the number of blessings that Zion would recieve. Imagine how much further ahead Zion would be. This also surprises me about the ROI that Ensign Peak has, which seems to be sonewhat modest, albeit aligned with other Investment Firms. I expected the ROI to be well above most other Investment Institutions.

this whole discussion is based entirely on a lie fabricated by joseph smith called the book of abraham which is actually a fragment of the book of the dead. a discussion based on a lie is not worth having in the first place. the basis of the book of abraham is only useful in proving that joseph smith was a charlatan.

Bow discussion around 45:00, Lehi could have seemingly purchased Laman and Lemuel’s bows earlier on from a one merchant, and Nephi (and Sam’s) from a different merchant few years (4-6) later. Hence, one craftsman’s bows were wrong temp and lost their spring, another craftsman’s steel bows break. So interesting. Thanks for that information!

thanks for the video however, BYU has been a communist piece of shit for many many years I don't see any difference at all. They fired Pro Steven E. Jones for telling truth. Cleon Skousen said many years ago it was a bed of communist and the church did nothing. Having said that I would enjoy the cleansing of BYU however, I don't think you can do it... I wish you good luck, to many hard hard decisions need to be made. Also, a return missionary applied for BYU with not the best grades and was denied. Not a single missionary that served should be denied... they can be given probation for 1 semester then if they don't make the grade dismissed. SHAME on BYU.

I got my Associate Degree at Ricks College in 1980, best time of my life. Went back to major in a different field. I have heard stories of BYU. From what I hear - BYU is BIG and that is a challenge for some. Dump teachers that is not following LDS principles. Have better filter of new students and filter out students that does not a good base in LDS principles. For students that are not keeping LDS principles, gone at end of semester. No woke and any support on anti Christ like idealogy. That may sound harsh but the world is getting worse and BYU needs to better the fight against the world. As a side note i taught in three different high schools in science. If the teacher does not setup good principles and rules, standards go down. The new introduction course is good and keep it up. The BYU president need to get down in the trenches to see-know what is really going on; don't trust yes-men. Set up a Recommended Box for what students think without names.

Remember all the stir when Elder Holland spoke at BYU a couple of years ago? While there were many thoughts about all of his comments, I'm not sure many people took it the way I took it. To me, it was a clear shot across the bow for BYU leadership to start making changes. Now I'm not sure, nor privy, to what extent any efforts were made to take his message to heart and make fundamental changes, nor can I really ever know if anyone tried. But with this change, it's apparent to me that those expected changes might not have been fast enough, or clear enough. In the future, when we look back, we will see and possibly recognize just how close our beloved BYU came to full collapse. We can only hope that Shane Reese rights the ship, no matter the cost.

And thx for mentioning Bushman!! In a stake fireside he stated, “as a member you have a right to ask any question you want about the founder (JS) of your church!” I feel that if we shared that spirit throughout the church we wouldn’t have so many doubts… and I pray we’re moving towards an era of increasing transparency!
